Designing Fantasy and Futuristic Worlds in Anime

Transport your audience to awe-inspiring realms by mastering the art of designing fantasy and futuristic anime worlds. This advanced course guides you through the complete creative process of conceptualizing, planning, and illustrating immersive environments that support compelling anime storytelling and memorable visual experiences. You'll explore techniques for combining realism with imagination, balancing architectural principles with creative freedom to design floating cities, futuristic metropolises, enchanted forests, ancient civilizations, and other unique worlds. Beyond creating individual environments, you'll learn how to establish a consistent visual language for technology, architecture, flora, fauna, culture, and environmental details that make your world feel cohesive and believable. The course also covers advanced use of lighting, color, atmosphere, scale, and environmental storytelling to strengthen mood and narrative impact. Through practical design exercises and complete environment development projects, you'll build portfolio-quality artwork while developing professional world-building workflows that can be applied to anime, manga, games, and visual development projects.

Skill Level

Beginner

Purpose

A short introduction to world concepting, focused on generating a few simple ideas for a fantasy or sci-fi setting before tackling full world-building.

What You Will Learn

  • Learn the basics of brainstorming fantasy and futuristic settings, and practice rough sketching to explore a couple of initial environment ideas

Outcome

You'll have a handful of rough environment concepts and a basic sense of how to begin developing a fictional world visually.

Skill Level

Intermediate

Purpose

Moves from rough ideas into structured environment design, balancing architectural logic with creative freedom for a single cohesive setting.

What You Will Learn

  • Practice combining realism with imagination to design one developed environment - such as a floating city or enchanted forest - with attention to architectural plausibility

Outcome

You'll be able to take a rough world concept and develop it into one polished, believable environment design.

Skill Level

Advanced

Purpose

Expands your world from a single environment into a consistent visual language across architecture, flora, fauna, and culture. At this tier, the course asks you to prove that consistency directly: rather than refining one environment further, you'll design a second, different environment from the same world and check it against the visual rules you set the first time.

What You Will Learn

  • Study how to design unique architectural and natural elements that fit a world's theme, and practice keeping technology, culture, and environment visually consistent across multiple scenes
  • You'll take the environment from the previous stage, write down the visual rules that define it (materials, color language, recurring architectural shapes, plant or creature design logic), and then design a second, contrasting environment - for example a wilderness area to pair with an earlier cityscape - applying those same rules so the two settings clearly belong to one another

Outcome

You'll be able to design a small set of environments that clearly belong to the same cohesive, believable world, backed by two finished environment sketches and a short written record of the visual rules connecting them.

Skill Level

Expert

Purpose

The complete world-building course, taking you from rough environment concepting all the way through to a fully realized fantasy or futuristic world built across several connected pieces of finished art. This is the most extensive offering in the series: rather than designing a single environment, you'll develop an entire world bible covering architecture, technology, flora and fauna, and cultural detail, then translate that bible into multiple finished illustrations that all clearly belong to the same place.

What You Will Learn

  • Work through the complete curriculum on world conceptualization, architectural and natural design, visual-language consistency, and advanced lighting, atmosphere, and scale
  • The course is structured as a multi-stage project: you'll begin with thumbnail exploration and mood boards, move into defining the core visual rules of your world (technology level, materials, color language, recurring shapes), and then apply those rules across at least three distinct finished environments - for example a central city, a wilderness or frontier area, and an interior space - so the same world feels cohesive from one scene to the next
  • Along the way, you'll revisit and refine earlier decisions as the world develops, which mirrors how world-building actually works on a real production

Outcome

You'll finish with a fully realized, visually cohesive fantasy or futuristic world documented across multiple finished environment illustrations, plus a written or visual world bible summarizing the rules you used to keep everything consistent - together forming a substantial body of work for a portfolio, personal project, or pitch.
